The Global Biofuels Alliance formed at the G-20 Summit is expected to strengthen the development of sustainable biofuels, in addition to promoting ethanol uptake.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"About_Biofuels\"><\/span>About Biofuels:&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Biofuels are the fuel derived from the <strong>biomass of plants or animal wastes<\/strong>. It is commonly produced from <strong>corn, sugarcane and animal waste like cow dung<\/strong>. These come under renewable energy as its sources are renewable unlike fossil fuels.\u00a0<\/li><li>These <strong>can be used to replace or can be used in addition<\/strong> to diesel, petrol or other fossil fuels for transport, stationary, portable and other applications.<\/li><li>There are different generations of biofuels based on the source of their production.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Limitations_of_Electric_Vehicles\"><\/span>Limitations of Electric Vehicles:&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Certain limitations of EV require complementary biofuel strategy for decarbonization of transportation:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Capital Intensive transition<\/strong>: for a transition to EVs, existing internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and the supporting infrastructure need to be replaced entirely, which is capital intensive.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Mining of minerals<\/strong>: the required batteries and critical minerals used in them need to be imported, adding to environmental concerns on how these minerals are mined, among other issues.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Biofuels, on the other hand, can be used in existing ICE engines and infrastructure with little to no modifications (depending on the blending rates) and offer import independence.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"About_Global_Biofuel_Alliance\"><\/span>About Global Biofuel Alliance:&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Global Biofuel Alliance is being established by <strong>India, Brazil and US<\/strong> which together account for <strong>85% of global Ethanol Production<\/strong>. It will be an international platform for sharing best practices, promoting sustainable biofuel development and enhancing its application.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>It aims to impact <strong>global energy architecture<\/strong> and achieve the target of net-zero emissions.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Objectives of Global Biofuel Alliance are:&nbsp;&nbsp;<ul><li>Promotion of <strong>International collaboration and cooperation<\/strong> to encourage the acceptance and utilisation of biofuels.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Development of <strong>robust markets for biofuels and facilitating global trade<\/strong> in biofuels.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Intensification of the use of<\/strong> <strong>sustainable biofuels<\/strong> in the transportation sector.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Development of concrete <strong>policy lesson-sharing<\/strong> and <strong>provision of technical support<\/strong> for national biofuels programs worldwide.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Challenges_to_scaling_up_of_Biofuel_in_India\"><\/span>Challenges to scaling up of Biofuel in India:&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Use of 1<\/strong><strong><sup>st<\/sup><\/strong><strong> Generation biofuel<\/strong>: 1<sup>st<\/sup> generation biofuel sourced from food crops, are primarily used in India. The policy target of achieving 20% ethanol blending (E20) by 2025-26 is also expected to be met by 1G ethanol putting stress on agricultural produce.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Groundwater depletion<\/strong> could triple during 2040-81. This could be partly attributed to increase in crop water requirements. Thus producing fuel from food crops would become unsustainable.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Stagnation of crop yield<\/strong>: India\u2019s crop yields have already stagnated, and global warming is expected to reduce yields. So, the strategy to meet blending targets cannot depend on surplus crop production.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>GHG emissions from agriculture sector<\/strong>: Agriculture sector has high direct GHG emissions. Thus depending on a sector with high GHG emissions to decrease emissions from the transport sector is a not beneficial balancing loop.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Measures_for_decarbonization_of_transportation\"><\/span>Measures for decarbonization of transportation:&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Use of Biomass:<\/strong> Biomass should be prioritised for sectors where there are limited low-carbon alternatives.
