--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 391\/318;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"History_of_South_Asian_regionalism\"><\/span><strong>History of South Asian regionalism<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The post-colonial and partitioned sub-continent chose economic autarky.<\/strong><ul><li>It devalued regional integration.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Endless conflict reinforced the lack of political appetite for cross-border commercial engagement.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The trans-regional connectivity inherited from the British Raj steadily withered as the newly independent countries focused on import substitution.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The 1990s saw the liberalization and globalization of the South Asian economies.<ul><li>It saw the injection of the language of regionalism in the sub-continent and a new interest in trade and connectivity.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Economic reform, however, was uneven across the region and tentative even in the capitals, with some support for change.&nbsp;<\/li><li>And it was hard to mobilize support for cross-border connectivity projects amidst the region\u2019s security challenges.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>The 21st century has seen considerable improvement within the Subcontinent.&nbsp;<ul><li>The share of intra-regional trade in the Subcontinent\u2019s trade with the world has grown from about 2 percent in 1990 to about 6 percent today but is nowhere near the potential or the achievements of other parts of Asia.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>SAARC is moribund.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/edukemy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image-51.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9832 lazyload\" width=\"244\" height=\"465\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 244px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 244\/465;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-list\"><li>Its last summit was held in 2014.&nbsp;<ul><li>Pakistan\u2019s priority for the last three decades has been to wrest concessions from India on Kashmir.&nbsp;<\/li><li>However, the rest of the region has moved forward through bilateral, sub-regional, and trans-regional mechanisms outside of SAARC. A successful SAARC is not a precondition for thriving economic regionalism.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"New_factors_accelerating_regional_economic_integration\"><\/span><strong>New factors accelerating regional economic integration<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The renewed pressure to undertake economic reform.&nbsp;<\/strong><ul><li>The recent economic crises in Sri Lanka and Pakistan are compelling the elites in Colombo and Rawalpindi to embark on serious and painful economic change.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Nepal and Sri Lanka are today more open to trade, investment, and connectivity with India.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Pakistan is turning to the Gulf to end its dependence on loans and bailouts.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>The region is looming larger in India\u2019s economic calculus.&nbsp;<\/strong><ul><li>As India\u2019s relative economic weight in the world has grown, its commercial ties with neighbours have increased.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Bangladesh, for example, is the fourth-largest destination for Indian exports, valued at about $16 billion in 2022.&nbsp;<\/li><li>India\u2019s exports to Sri Lanka at about $6 billion are comparable with India\u2019s exports to Japan.<\/li><li>Trans-border projects to promote rail, road, energy, power, financial, and digital connectivity have all gained new impetus in India\u2019s engagement with its neighbours.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/edukemy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image-52.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9833 lazyload\" width=\"333\" height=\"319\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/edukemy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image-52.png 600w, https:\/\/edukemy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/image-52-585x560.png 585w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 333px) 100vw, 333px\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 333px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 333\/319;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Renewed rivalry between the US and China and deepening conflict between Delhi and Beijing<\/strong>, have altered the Subcontinent\u2019s geo-economic template.&nbsp;<ul><li>In de-risking their commercial ties with China, the US and its allies now actively promote economic and technological engagement with India.<\/li><li>They are also promoting economic integration between India and its smaller neighbours.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The US, for example, helped Nepal\u2019s energy and road connectivity with India with the $500 million Millennium Challenge Grant.&nbsp;<ul><li>Kathmandu approved it last year despite considerable opposition from China.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Japan is now promoting sub-regional connectivity between India and Bangladesh that can potentially transform the economic map of the eastern subcontinent and the Bay of Bengal.<\/li><li>Tokyo and Paris also joined hands with Delhi to help Colombo navigate its economic crisis.&nbsp;<ul><li>Macron\u2019s visit to Sri Lanka, the first by a French President, is an attempt to integrate Colombo into Paris\u2019s Indo-Pacific outreach.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>India, which was complacent about China\u2019s growing economic presence in the region a few years ago, has offered a measure of competition in the Subcontinent with its own bouquet of regional infrastructure projects.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/opinion\/columns\/south-asia-is-open-for-business-8871973\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Indian Express<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Frequently_Asked_Questions_FAQs\"><\/span>Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_What_has_led_to_the_recent_opening_up_of_South_Asia_to_business\"><\/span><strong>1.
