Water is Food\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Decoding_the_editorial_World_Food_Day\"><\/span><strong>Decoding the editorial: World Food Day<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Food Day theme requires evaluation of India\u2019s success in food security and water sustainability.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indias_food_security\"><\/span><strong>India\u2019s food security<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Cereals<\/strong>&nbsp;<ul><li>Having been through a journey of \u201cship to mouth\u201d in the mid 1960s, India has come a long way.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Only in the last three years, 2020-21 to 2022-23, India exported 85 million tonnes (MT) of cereals, mainly rice, wheat and corn.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>It did this even after giving free food (rice or wheat) to more than 800 million people under the PM Garib Kalyan Yojana.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Milk<\/strong>&nbsp;<ul><li>India has also made major strides in milk production which has shot up from 17 MT in 1951 to 222 MT in 2022-23.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The country is the largest producer of milk by far.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Poultry and fishery<\/strong>&nbsp;<ul><li>Since 2000-01, poultry and fishery production has been growing at a fast rate.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>India has now ushered in a pink (poultry) and blue (fishery) revolution.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indias_food_insecurity\"><\/span><strong>India\u2019s food insecurity<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"410\" height=\"276\" data-src=\"https:\/\/edukemy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/image-79.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-12824 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 410px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 410\/276;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>India will not be able to achieve its Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of zero hunger (including malnutrition) by 2030.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Water_in_agriculture\"><\/span><strong>Water in agriculture&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Water deficiency:<\/strong> While India is home to almost 18 percent of the world\u2019s population, it has only 4 percent of global freshwater resources.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Much of this water is used in agriculture. While FAO puts this figure at 90 percent, the Indian Central Water Commission says it is 78 percent.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Structural problems:<\/strong> India has not succeeded in attracting private sector investments in reservoirs and canal networks as water is almost free.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>The government does not have enough funds to invest in this, after doling out large food and fertiliser subsidies costing more than Rs 4 lakh crore.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>The state governments do not have the political will to charge for power that is used for groundwater irrigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Strategy_with_respect_to_water_in_agriculture\"><\/span><strong>Strategy with respect to water in agriculture<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>On the supply side, <strong>India must augment buffer stocking of water <\/strong>during the monsoon season in its reservoirs, and recharge groundwater through check dams and watersheds, etc.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>While almost half of <strong>India\u2019s gross cropped area <\/strong>is irrigated today, we need to take it to at least 75 percent if we have to cope with weather vagaries associated with climate change.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>India must work on the demand side to ensure more rational allocation and efficient use of water across crops<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li><li>This calls for not only institutional reforms in the Indian irrigation sector but also in the pricing of water and power for irrigation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Focus_needs_to_shift_from_land_productivity_to_water_productivity\"><\/span><strong>Focus needs to shift from land productivity to water productivity.&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Research at ICRIER on water productivity of 10 major crops showed significant results.&nbsp;<\/li><li>It was found that while in Punjab land productivity of rice is one of the highest, its irrigation water productivity is the lowest.&nbsp;<\/li><li>On top of this, Punjab also emits the highest levels of carbon emissions (CO2eq), almost 5 tonnes\/ha of paddy cultivation.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>In this research on Punjab, it was found that the subsidy from power and fertilisers in paddy cultivation amounts to roughly Rs 30,000\/ha.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>This amount can be given to farmers in Punjab who are willing to switch from paddy to pulses, oilseeds, and millets.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>This will create a level playing field across crops and would be good for the environment as well as nutrition.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Above all, it will save Punjab from water disaster as roughly 78 percent of its blocks are over-exploiting groundwater.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Certain_farming_practices_can_be_rewarded\"><\/span><strong>Certain farming practices can be rewarded<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Direct seeded rice (DSR),&nbsp;<\/li><li>Alternate wet and dry (AWD) irrigation,&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Zero till, and&nbsp;<\/li><li>Drip irrigation.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The bottom line is that unless we use water efficiently, ensuring sustainable food security is difficult.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/:https:\/\/indianexpress.com\/article\/opinion\/columns\/ashok-gulati-writes-how-india-can-minimise-climate-risk-in-agriculture-8984596\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Hindu<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Frequently_Asked_Questions_FAQs\"><\/span>Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"FAQ_What_role_do_individuals_play_in_minimizing_climate_risk\"><\/span><strong>FAQ: What role do individuals play in minimizing climate risk?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Answer:<\/em> Individuals can contribute significantly by adopting sustainable practices such as reducing energy consumption, using public transport, and minimizing waste.
