Interestingly, there is <strong><em>no documented record of Punjabi literature<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>before the advent of Guru Nanak<\/em><\/strong> (1469-1538).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first significant text in Sikh literature is <strong><em>the &#8216;Adi Granth,&#8217; <\/em><\/strong>which was completed in 1604 under the patronage of the fifth Guru, Guru Arjan Dev. This compilation was a monumental achievement, and its preservation was deemed sacred. Notably, not a single word from the original text was altered or removed, ensuring its passage through time in its pristine form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>The structure of the &#8216;Adi Granth&#8217; reflects the profound nature of Sikh spirituality. <\/em><\/strong>The text is presented in the form of hymns set to specific Ragas, providing a musical and spiritual journey for its readers. Guru Nanak&#8217;s expressions within the &#8216;Adi Granth&#8217; are characterized by their aphoristic nature, representing the amalgamation of deep reflection and intuitive principles of self-realization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_Literary_Works_of_Sikhism\"><\/span><strong>Key Literary Works of Sikhism<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Adi Granth:<\/strong> This foundational text was <strong><em>compiled in 1604 by Bhai Gurdas<\/em><\/strong> under the guidance of Guru Arjan Dev. It serves as the precursor to the Guru Granth Sahib, containing the teachings of the Sikh Gurus as well as contributions from fifteen Bhagats representing the Bhakti and Sufi traditions.<\/li><li><strong>Guru Granth Sahib:<\/strong> Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru, expanded upon the &#8216;Adi Granth&#8217; in 1678, and Sikhs hold it in the highest reverence. In addition to the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, the Guru Granth Sahib includes contributions from thirteen Bhakti saints known as &#8216;Bhagats,&#8217; and two Muslim Bhagats, Kabir and Baba Farid.<\/li><li><strong>Dasam Granth: <\/strong>This compilation is often <strong><em>attributed to Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru,<\/em><\/strong> although there is debate surrounding its authorship. A genre known as <strong><em>&#8216;Qissa,&#8217; primarily influenced by Muslim writers, gained prominence.<\/em><\/strong> Two of the most celebrated romances include <strong><em>&#8216;Hir and Ranjha&#8217; and &#8216;Mirza and Sahiban.&#8217;<\/em><\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>Waris Shah <\/em><\/strong>is renowned for his narrative of &#8216;Hir and Ranjha,&#8217; infusing it with powerful dialogues and emotional depth, particularly in the tragic sequel.<\/li><li>Another notable work<strong><em>, &#8216;Mina-Sahiban,&#8217; presents the psychological conflict of the heroine Sahiban, torn between loyalty to her family and her love for Mirza. <\/em><\/strong>The narrative is beautifully articulated in Peelu&#8217;s version.<\/li><li><strong><em>Aggara, a Hindu poet, composed the saga or &#8216;Var&#8217; of Haqiqat Rai,<\/em><\/strong> a Sikh Hindu youth martyred for his faith in Lahore during Shah Jahan&#8217;s reign, further enriching the secular literary landscape.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Contribution_of_Sufi_Poets\"><\/span><strong>Contribution of Sufi Poets<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sufi poets have played a significant role in the development of Punjabi literature. Another remarkable figure is <strong><em>Shah Husain (1553-1593), a nomadic hermit who roamed the countryside and composed music to accompany his passionate lyrics in the Kafi style,<\/em><\/strong> which is widely accepted by Sufi poets.<\/li><li><strong><em>Bulhe Shah (1658-1758), the most celebrated Sufi poet,<\/em><\/strong> infused his works with themes of ecstasy, love, and renunciation of material possessions.
