Even as enormous scientific and material progress is made, it is unfortunate that a huge number of human and economic losses have mounted. This is because we hardly have a policy on systematic disaster management. Government as well as other disaster management agencies become mobilized only after the disasters occur.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"blob:https:\/\/edukemy.com\/b50926bc-1ea6-4280-9b3c-0fd14ce4b7d3\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were 226 earthquakes in 2017,<strong> 203 in 3018, 309 earthquakes in 2019. Earthquakes of magnitude 4 and above nearly doubled from 78 in 2018 to 159 in 2019<\/strong>, the response from the Union Earth Sciences Ministry revealed. Providing food, installing temporary tents, restorations of important social infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, houses etc. need to be done on priority and fast manner.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Seismic Zonation and Building Codes: <\/strong>The <strong>National Building Code of India<\/strong> (NBC) incorporates earthquake-resistant design and construction guidelines for buildings in high-risk zones. However, implementation and enforcement of these codes remain inadequate, especially in older structures and rural areas. For example, the<strong><em> 2001 Bhuj earthquake in Gujarat revealed vulnerabilities in building structures, leading to significant damage and loss of life.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Early Warning Systems: <\/strong>India has established the Seismological Network to detect earthquakes and issue timely warnings. However, <strong><em>the coverage of early warning systems is limited to specific regions,<\/em><\/strong> and there is a need to expand and strengthen the network to provide sufficient warning time for densely populated areas.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Some_Important_institutional_measures_to_prevent_and_mitigate_earthquake_loss\"><\/span><strong>Some Important institutional measures to prevent and mitigate earthquake loss:<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>The National Center for Seismology for India\u2019s Earthquake preparedness: <\/strong>An office under the Earth Sciences Ministry. Governmental organisations receive reports on seismic surveillance and hazards from it.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>National Earthquake Risk Mitigation Project (NERMP): <\/strong>Enhancing earthquake mitigation programmes\u2019 non-structural and structural components.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>National Building Code (NBC) for India\u2019s Earthquake preparedness: <\/strong>Detailed building regulations and a national instrument offering standards for governing building construction operations nationwide.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>National Retrofit Program for India\u2019s Earthquake preparedness: <\/strong>The NDMA released guidelines on \u201cseismic retrofitting\u201d along with specialists from several IITs and the necessary ministries. Following these standards, the National Retrofitting Program was introduced by the Home Ministry in 2014.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Technological_Intervention\"><\/span><strong>Technological Intervention:\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018India Quake\u2019\u2013 <\/strong>The mobile app, which was created by the National Center for Seismology, disseminates information about earthquakes in real time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u2018Sagar Vani\u2019-<\/strong>The smartphone app, designed to assist coastal communities, promptly notifies the user community of ocean-related information and alerts (such as high waves and Tsunami early warnings) for their protection.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0These are some of the issues which can become the biggest hurdle in disaster management. Addressing these aspects will strengthen India&#8217;s preparedness for earthquake mitigation and reduce the impact on lives and infrastructure.
