This remarkable geological phenomenon finds its origins in the intricate interplay of tectonic activity, volcanic eruptions, and erosion processes over millions of years. The region lies within the Pacific Ring of Fire, a horseshoe-shaped zone characterized by intense seismic and volcanic activity, making it prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The archipelagos sit atop multiple tectonic plates, including the Eurasian, Pacific, Philippine Sea, and Australian plates, which constantly shift and collide, leading to the formation of volcanic arcs and island chains. As magma rises from the Earth’s mantle through subduction zones, it often erupts violently, giving rise to new landmasses. Over time, the relentless forces of erosion sculpt these volcanic islands, shaping their diverse topographies and contributing to the stunning natural beauty that defines the Indonesian and Philippines archipelagos.

Tag: Salient features of the world’s physical geography.

Table of Contents

Toggle

Decoding the Question:

Answer:

Reasons for Formation of Thousands of Islands in Indonesian and Philippines Archipelagos:

In case you still have your doubts, contact us on 9811333901.

Visit our YouTube Channel – here

Decoding the Question:

In Introduction, define archipelago and Malay Archipelago which consists of both the islands of Indonesia and Philippines.

In Body, elaborate the formation of thousands of islands in Indonesian and Philippines archipelagos separately.

Conclude with the significance and the features of archipelagos.

Answer:

The formation of archipelagos is one of the many things that occurs on our planet’s crust. An archipelago is a group or chain of islands that can be found in different bodies of water, including oceans, lakes, and rivers. These chains of islands are formed in two different fashions, through volcanic activity or through a combination of erosion and sediment deposition.

An archipelago is a group of islands closely scattered in a body of water. Most archipelagoes are made of oceanic islands. This means the islands were formed by volcanoes erupting from the ocean floor. Many island arcs were formed over a single “hot spot”. Malay Archipelago, largest group of islands in the world, consisting of the more than 17,000 islands of Indonesia and the approximately 7,000 islands of the Philippines. The regional name “East Indies” is sometimes used as a synonym for the archipelago.

Reasons for Formation of Thousands of Islands in Indonesian and Philippines Archipelagos:

Indonesia: The tectonics of Indonesia are very complex, as it is a meeting point of several tectonic plates. Indonesia is located between two continental plates i.e., the Eurasian Plate and Australian Plate and between two oceanic plates: the Philippine Sea plate and the Pacific plate. The subduction of the Indian oceanic plate beneath the Eurasian continental plate formed the volcanic arc in western Indonesia, one of the most seismically active areas on the planet with a long history of powerful eruptions and earthquakes. This chain of active volcanoes formed Sumatra, Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara islands, most of which, particularly Java and Bali, emerged within the last 2–3 million years.

The Pacific and Australian plate movements controlled the tectonics of the eastern portion of Indonesia.

Philippines: Few countries around the world are archipelagos, made up of thousands of islands. One such country is the Philippines which is made up of over 7,000 islands. The country is situated along the Pacific Rim of Fire, an active volcanic zone. The movement of tectonic plates and volcanic eruptions have contributed over millions of years to the formation of the islands of the Philippines. The movement of these plates is made possible by the churning of magma (molten rock) found beneath the crust. The plates are classified into two categories based on size: major plates and minor plates. The planet is made up of seven major plates and numerous other minor plates. The process forces the underlying magma to the crust from where it emerges in violent nature. When the subduction and resultant eruptions happen in submerged sections of the crust over an extended period of geological time, it leads to the formation of island arcs.

The archipelagos have distinct landscapes. The reason is the constant shifting of the earth’s plates. From stony beaches to waterfalls to mountainous terrains and volcanic emissions, one can see it all. Archipelagos also vary in size. The archipelagos in Indonesia are one of the world’s largest and have outstanding physical features, whereas in the Philippines, the archipelagos have irregular configurations.

In case you still have your doubts, contact us on 9811333901.

For UPSC Prelims Resources, Click here

For Daily Updates and Study Material:

Join our Telegram Channel – Edukemy for IAS

1.
