India is the <strong>world\u2019s largest producer of cotton<\/strong>, contributing <strong>18% of the total production<\/strong>. <strong>25%<\/strong> of the world\u2019s cultivation <strong>area for cotton belongs to India<\/strong>, the <strong>highest in the world<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cotton industry <strong>was largely concentrated in places like Maharashtra and Gujarat<\/strong>. Gradually after the 1920s various factors <strong>led to the decentralization<\/strong> of the industry.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Factors_for_Highly_Decentralized_Cotton_Textile_Industry_in_India\"><\/span><strong>Factors for Highly Decentralized Cotton Textile Industry in India:<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Earlier, inadequate number of raw materials debarred the decentralization of the textile industry. After the development of the railway, <strong>supply of raw material<\/strong> secured the decentralization of the textile industry.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>The <strong>emergence of hydro-electricity<\/strong> helped boost the production in areas such as Coimbatore, Madurai, etc.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Labour cost<\/strong> played a significant role in decentralizing the cotton industries. As more and more industries opened up in smaller cities for <strong>cheap labour<\/strong>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>Black soil<\/strong> is conducive for cotton production. <strong>South India has a vast area under black soil<\/strong> which is capable of producing cotton as raw material.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>Subsequently, <strong>Ahmedabad became one of the developed<\/strong> hubs of cotton production. It had an advantage of being able to manage the supply and demand chain. The <strong>investment<\/strong> poured from the rich Parsis and Gujrati to set up new cotton industries, helped this region become one of the major cotton producing centres.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahmedabad, Bharuch, Vadodara, and Surat became the important centres where textile industries were developed. Coimbatore, Salem, Tuticorin, Pondicherry became some of the emerging centres of textile industry. Due to this, India was able to export cotton of <strong>$6.3 billion in<\/strong> the year 2019, which is <strong>11.8% of global cotton export<\/strong>.
