These challenges can come from different things like politics, society, economy, and culture. Here are some examples of what can threaten India’s unity:

Regionalism:Regionalism means that some areas or groups care more about their own interests than what’s good for the whole country. It can also hurt the country’s unity. Sometimes, the situation with law and order gets worse because of regional demands and protests.

Divisive politics:At times, politicians use things like caste or religion to get votes. This kind of politics can divide people and lead to violence, making minorities feel unsafe and untrusted.

Development imbalance:When there’s an unequal development in different areas, and if economic policies and disparities are not addressed properly, it can make a region less developed. This, in turn, can lead to violence, cause people to move away, and even lead to demands for separation from the rest of the country. For example, in the North East region, economic underdevelopment has led to some groups wanting to break away from India.

Ethnic differentiation and nativism:Differences between ethnic groups can sometimes cause conflicts, especially when there’s competition for jobs, limited resources, or a threat to cultural identity.

For example, there have been frequent clashes between the Bodo and Bengali-speaking Muslim communities in Assam. This is made worse by the “son of the soil” idea, which gives certain benefits, rights, roles, and responsibilities to people based on where they were born, which may not apply to others.

Geographical isolation: When a region is geographically cut off from the rest of the country, it can lead to identity problems and demands for separation.

In the case of the North-East, it’s isolated from the rest of India and connected by a narrow corridor known as the Siliguri corridor (Chicken’s neck). The area doesn’t have good infrastructure, and it’s economically less developed compared to the rest of the country. This has resulted in several cases of separatism and issues like cross-border terrorism.

Inter-religious conflicts:Conflicts between different religions not only damage the relationship between two communities by spreading fear and mistrust but also harm the country’s secular nature.

Political polarization:Political divisions and polarization can create tension and conflicts, especially when political problems are linked to identity or cultural distinctions.

Influence of external factors:External factors like foreign organizations, terrorist groups, or extremist groups can sometimes encourage violence and promote separatist feelings.

For example, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) has been accused of supporting and training militants to fight in Jammu and Kashmir and encourage separatism among local groups.

Table of Contents

Toggle

FAQs

<a class="ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-2" href="https://edukemy.com/blog/factors-that-threaten-indias-unity-upsc-indian-society-notes/#1_What_are_some_factors_that_threaten_Indias_unity" title="1.
