While it aims to <strong>promote development, alleviate poverty<\/strong> and <strong>address humanitarian crises,<\/strong> ethical concerns arise in its implementation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Key_ethical_considerations_in_contemporary_international_aid\"><\/span><strong>Key ethical considerations in contemporary international aid<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Transparency and accountability<\/strong> in the distribution and utilisation of the aid as lack of it results into corruption, wastage and stifling of development process&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>e.g. &#8211; <strong>WB report<\/strong> highlighting resource misappropriation by African dictators. <strong>Economic survey 2016-17<\/strong> pointed out aid curse.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\"><li><strong>Preference to humanitarian and altruistic motives<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>e.g. &#8211; Indian aid to Tsunami affected nations (2004), to Nepal post-earthquake in 2015, to Turkey in 2023 (operation Dost).&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"3\"><li><strong>Sustainability and local capacity building<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>India <\/strong>has supported <strong>Bhutan <\/strong>in building its capacity in various sectors, including education, healthcare, and infrastructure development through <strong>ITEC <\/strong>initiative etc.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"4\"><li><strong>Adherence to cultural sensitivities <\/strong>&#8211; Humanitarian aid must respect local customs.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>e.g. Ignoring them, as seen in <strong>Liberia <\/strong>during the <strong>Ebola <\/strong>crisis, resulted in widespread mistrust&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"5\"><li><strong>Resource dependency<\/strong> &#8211; this is in contrast to altruism, it aims to entrench dependency and then seek concessions.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>e.g. &#8211; <strong>China&#8217;s <\/strong>predatory lending through <strong>CPEC <\/strong>in Pakistan, Hambantota in Sri Lanka etc.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"6\"><li><strong>Imposition of conditionalities <\/strong>&#8211;&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>IMF <\/strong>has been criticised for being ideologically motivated and promoting the &#8220;<strong>Washington consensus<\/strong>&#8221; under the guise of the aid.&nbsp;<\/li><li><strong>U.S. aid to Central American<\/strong> countries has been accused of prioritising political interests over the welfare of the recipients.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"7\"><li><strong>Environmental degradation<\/strong> has become an issue due to negative spillovers.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>e.g. International aid projects in the <strong>Amazon <\/strong>region of South America, such as road construction, have often caused deforestation and environmental damage by enabling illegal activities like logging and mining.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, ethical international aid should be <strong>recipient-centred, sustainable, respectful, and accountable. <\/strong>By adhering to these principles, aid efforts can better <strong>address poverty, inequality, and promote lasting human development<\/strong>.
