During the rule of the East India Company and later during the British Raj, it was widely grown in India. It was often called \u201cBlue Gold\u201d and widely traded in the European market. New inventions took place in Germany where the invention of scientific techniques like modern synthetic chemistry took place. By the late 19th century, nearly all indigo came from indigo bush plantations in India.
