In 1976, the Sardar Swaran Singh Committee<\/strong> proposed the inclusion of Fundamental Duties<\/strong>, recognizing its importance during the internal emergency of 1975-77. Consequently, a new section, Part IV A<\/strong>, was incorporated into the Constitution, comprising Article 51A<\/strong> containing ten Fundamental Duties<\/strong>. In 2002, the 86th Amendment Act<\/strong> added another Fundamental Duty<\/strong>. The concept of Fundamental Duties<\/strong> in the Indian Constitution was adopted from the Constitution of the former USSR<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fundamental Duties<\/strong> encompass both moral and civic obligations applicable solely to citizens. Similar to the Directive Principles of State Policy<\/strong>, they are non-justiciable<\/strong> but can be enforced by the Parliament<\/strong> through appropriate legislation. The Constitution guarantees the following Fundamental Duties<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Adherence to the Constitution<\/strong>, respecting its ideals, institutions, the National Flag<\/strong>, and the National Anthem<\/strong>.<\/li>
  2. Embracing and following the noble ideals that fueled the national struggle for freedom<\/strong>.<\/li>
  3. Upholding and safeguarding the sovereignty, unity, and integrity of India<\/strong>.<\/li>
  4. Defending the country and providing national service<\/strong> when called upon.<\/li>
  5. Promoting harmony<\/strong> and a spirit of common brotherhood<\/strong>.<\/li>
  6. Valuing and preserving the rich heritage of the country’s composite culture<\/strong>.<\/li>
  7. Protecting and enhancing the natural environment<\/strong>.<\/li>
  8. Cultivating scientific temper, humanism, and a spirit of inquiry and reform<\/strong>.<\/li>
  9. Safeguarding public property<\/strong> and renouncing violence<\/strong>.<\/li>
  10. Striving for excellence<\/strong> in all spheres of individual and collective activity.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    These Fundamental Duties<\/strong> serve to make citizens aware of their responsibilities alongside enjoying their rights<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
