--smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 602\/355;\" \/><figcaption><strong>Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indias_Progress\"><\/span><strong>India&#8217;s Progress:<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>India has reported that <strong>22% of its terrestrial area and 5% of marine and coastal areas<\/strong> are now included in the Protected Area Network as part of Target 3, known as the 30&#215;30 initiative.&nbsp;<\/li><li>Despite progress in expanding protected areas, concerns have emerged regarding legal definitions and potential diversions of these areas for non-conservation purposes in India.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The <strong>Forest (Conservation) Amendment Act of 2023<\/strong> in India broadened the definition of forest activities to encompass commercial ventures like zoos and ecotourism, signalling a commitment to sustainable development.&nbsp;<\/li><li>However, the Supreme Court has mandated that any proposals for establishing zoos and safaris within forest areas (excluding protected areas) must first receive approval from the court.&nbsp;<\/li><li>India has identified <strong>14 categories<\/strong> of Other Effective <strong>Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs<\/strong>), which include citizen-led initiatives.
