Thus, it will drag the rural incomes back to below the poverty line and erode the gains made by India in rural poverty reduction since the reforms in 1991.<\/li><li>Climate Change will also worsen India\u2019 performance on social indices and hinder the achievement of the sustainable development goals.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Poverty_and_Women_in_India\"><\/span><strong>Poverty and Women in India<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The<strong> burden<\/strong> of poverty weighs down heavier on girls and women in India than it does on the opposite sex. According to an Oxfam report, in the workplace, women still receive 34% less wages than their male counterparts for the same work.<\/li><li>In India, girls belonging to families in the top 20% get nine years of education on average, while girls from families in the bottom 20% get none at all. Even those who make it to school are often pulled out due to financial reasons.<\/li><li>In addition, more than 23 million girls drop out of school annually because of a lack of toilets in school and proper menstrual hygiene management facilities.<\/li><li>Women in India spend around five hours a day on unpaid care work while men devote a mere half an hour on average.
