{"id":37704,"date":"2024-04-15T09:49:52","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T09:49:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/edukemy.com\/blog\/?p=37704"},"modified":"2024-04-15T09:49:53","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T09:49:53","slug":"why-did-the-non-cooperation-movement-fail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/edukemy.com\/blog\/why-did-the-non-cooperation-movement-fail\/","title":{"rendered":"Why did the Non-Cooperation Movement fail?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>Why did the Non-Cooperation Movement fail?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the history of struggle for India\u2019s independence, there is one movement that stands out as a beacon of non-cooperation resistance, &amp; this resistance was spearheaded by Mahatma Gandhi!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 1920, Gandhi through the manifesto urged people to embrace the <strong>Swadeshi principle<\/strong>, spin their cloth &amp; work towards eradicating social evils like eliminating <strong>untouchability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The movement was not just about passive resistance, rather it was a multifaceted protest against British rule!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indians were asked to relinquish their titles, boycott foreign goods &amp; withdraw from government institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea of Swaraj, which started from the Swadeshi movement &#8211; Gandhi took it from the cities to rural India!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The movement was a result of betrayal by the <a href=\"https:\/\/edukemy.com\/blog\/tag\/montague-chelmsford-reforms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GoI Act 1919<\/a> &amp; against repressive measures like the Rowlatt Act, Khilafat Wrong, &amp; Punjab Wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what was the reason that this mass movement failed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest reason we talk about this is the Chauri Chaura incident. The incident turned violent, &amp; because of this Gandhi suspended the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But we have multiple reasons why NCM was bound to fail &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Non-realization of the Cause<\/strong> &#8211; People had not learned or fully understood the method of movement, i.e. non-violence. The movement led to a kind of excitement among people, which would have eventually turned violent. This violent movement could be easily suppressed by the Britishers.<\/li><li><strong>Not Sustainable<\/strong> &#8211; A movement like this couldn\u2019t be sustained at such a high pitch for a very long time!<\/li><li><strong>Hindu-Muslim Unity<\/strong> was based on Khilafat wrong. However, the relevance of the Caliphate and its demand was lost when Turkey was declared a secular state.<\/li><li>While we talk about the Hindu-Muslim unity of the movement, it was <strong>communalized<\/strong> by clashes like the Moplah rebellion, which also affected national politics.<\/li><li>While Swaraj was the ultimate aim, <strong>what was it exactly?<\/strong> There were vague definitions for everyone, but it was taken differently by different sections of society.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of a guide is, to help with thinking capabilities.
