separatist insurgency in Manipur is largely attributed to the perceived discontent over the &#8220;forced&#8221; merger of Manipur with the Union of India and the subsequent delay in granting it full-fledged statehood.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The erstwhile Kingdom of Manipur was merged with India on 15th October 1949, but it became a state only in 1972.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Rise of Militancy<\/strong>:\u00a0<ul><li>In the later years, several militant outfits were formed, including the People\u2019s Liberation Army (PLA), People\u2019s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK), Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), and Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL).\u00a0<\/li><li>These valley-based outfits have been demanding an independent Manipur.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Spillover Effect of Greater Nagalim Demand<\/strong>:\u00a0<ul><li>The Naga movement in neighbouring Nagaland spilled over into Manipur\u2019s hill districts, with the NSCN-IM controlling most of it while pressing for \u201cNagalim\u201d (Greater Nagaland), which is perceived in the valley as a \u201cthreat\u201d to Manipur\u2019s \u201cterritorial integrity\u201d.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Valley-Hills Conflict<\/strong>:\u00a0<ul><li>While the hills account for nine-tenths of Manipur\u2019s geographical area, they are sparsely populated, with most of the state\u2019s population concentrated in the valley.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>The Meitei community forms a majority in Imphal valley, while the surrounding hill districts are inhabited by Nagas and Kukis.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li><strong>Naga-Kuki Conflict<\/strong>:\u00a0<ul><li>In the early 1990s, ethnic clashes between Nagas and Kukis led to the formation of several Kuki insurgent groups, which have now scaled down their demand from a separate Kuki state to a Territorial Council.\u00a0<\/li><li>The Continuance of insurgency led to the formation of smaller outfits like the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF), People\u2019s United Liberation Front (PULF), and other splinter groups.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Recent_context\"><\/span><strong>Recent context:&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The Manipur High Court (HC) directed the State to pursue a 10-year-old recommendation to grant Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the non-tribal Meitei community.\u00a0<\/li><li>The court has instructed the government to review the petitioners&#8217; case and submit its recommendation within four weeks of receiving the order.\u00a0<\/li><li>All-Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) organised a &#8220;tribal solidarity rally&#8221; against the alleged move to include the Meiteis on the ST list.\u00a0<\/li><li>Since February 2023, Manipur, a Northeastern state, has experienced violent clashes among various ethnic groups.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Tensions escalated on May 3 when a tribal student union held a protest march against the non-tribal Meitei community&#8217;s demand to be included in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>The demonstration turned violent, prompting law enforcement to impose a curfew and authorise shoot-at-sight measures to restore order.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" are the largest community in Manipur, predominantly residing in the Imphal Valley.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>They speak the Meitei language, also known as Manipuri, which is an official language of India and the sole official language of Manipur State.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li><li>Geographically, the Imphal Valley is their stronghold, comprising over 64% of the state&#8217;s population, while the surrounding hills, covering 90% of Manipur&#8217;s area, are inhabited by various tribal communities, many of whom are Christians.\u00a0<\/li><li>Major festivals of the Meiteis include Lai Haraoba, Cheiraoba, and Yaosang.
