The risks felt too high, and public trust too low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But now, with the <strong>climate crisis accelerating<\/strong> and the world falling behind on clean energy targets, nuclear is being re-evaluated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Countries are taking another look:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Germany<\/strong> is debating restarting reactors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>France<\/strong> is investing in next-generation nuclear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Japan<\/strong> is reopening its reactors<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Nuclear energy is quietly making a global comeback.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Indias_Energy_Challenge_The_Gaps_Are_Clear\"><\/span><strong>India&#8217;s Energy Challenge: The Gaps Are Clear<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As of <strong>2025<\/strong>, India\u2019s total installed power capacity stands at around <strong>470 GW<\/strong>, roughly split as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>~<strong>55%<\/strong> from fossil fuels (coal, oil, gas)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>~<strong>45%<\/strong> from renewables:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Solar (~20%)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wind (~10%)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hydro (~10%)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Others (biomass, waste-to-energy, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Under its <em>Paris Agreement<\/em> commitments, India has pledged to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Generate <strong>500 GW<\/strong> of renewable energy by 2030<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ensure <strong>50% of total energy needs<\/strong> come from non-fossil sources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Achieve <strong>net-zero emissions by 2070<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But several roadblocks remain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%9D%8C_Coal\"><\/span>\u274c Coal<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Can\u2019t be expanded much further\u2014due to pollution, dependence on imports, and international pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%9D%8C_Hydro\"><\/span>\u274c Hydro<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Growth is limited by seismic risks, displacement concerns, and environmental damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%9D%8C_Solar_Wind\"><\/span>\u274c Solar &amp; Wind<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite rapid growth, face major challenges like land acquisition, expensive battery storage, and <strong>heavy dependence on Chinese tech<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 That leaves <strong>nuclear energy<\/strong> as the <em>only large-scale, low-carbon alternative<\/em> that can realistically bridge the gap between India\u2019s <strong>climate goals and industrial energy needs<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Nuclear_Must_Be_Reconsidered\"><\/span><strong>Why Nuclear Must Be Reconsidered<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now, <strong>nuclear energy contributes less than 2%<\/strong> (~8 GW) to India\u2019s total power generation\u2014<strong>even less than bioenergy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the vision is bold. Under its <strong>\u2018Viksit Bharat 2047\u2019<\/strong> agenda, the government aims to scale nuclear power capacity up to <strong>100 GW<\/strong>. Achieving this would require:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rapid deployment of <strong>Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Investment in <strong>fast breeder reactors<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leveraging India\u2019s <strong>thorium reserves<\/strong> for long-term energy independence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Building strong <strong>public-private partnerships<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the <strong>2025 Union Budget<\/strong> has already allocated <strong>\u20b920,000 crore<\/strong> for SMR development. These 50\u201355 MW compact units can be deployed across the country\u2014helping <strong>decentralize energy access<\/strong> and reduce dependence on coal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Indigenous_Edge_Indias_Nuclear_Innovation\"><\/span><strong>The Indigenous Edge: India\u2019s Nuclear Innovation<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>India already has significant domestic expertise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Proven design and operation of <strong>Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs)<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Successful testing of <strong>fast breeder reactors<\/strong>, which enable thorium usage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plans for over <strong>20 new nuclear power plants<\/strong> across states like Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Karnataka, MP, and Rajasthan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>International collaborations\u2014like the <strong>Srikakulam project<\/strong> with the US<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The government is also promoting a new initiative: <strong>\u2018Bharat Small Reactors\u2019<\/strong>\u2014200\u2013220 MW indigenous units that are <strong>modular, flexible, and safer<\/strong> than older models.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Conclusion_Time_to_Rethink_Nuclear_Power_Strategically\"><\/span><strong>Conclusion: Time to Rethink Nuclear Power, Strategically<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>India can\u2019t rely only on solar and wind to meet its future energy needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udc49 <strong>Nuclear energy is not optional anymore\u2014it\u2019s essential.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the climate clock ticking and energy demands rising, we need a <strong>clean, indigenous, secure, and scalable<\/strong> power source.
