But here\u2019s the thing most aspirants miss: <strong>geography silently shaped some of the most crucial boundary decisions of 1947<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best examples is the story of <strong>Murshidabad and Malda<\/strong> \u2014 two Muslim-majority districts that still became part of India. The River Factor: Why the Hooghly\/ Bhagirathi Changed Everything<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>Hooghly River (Bhagirathi in the north)<\/strong> flows through Malda and Murshidabad before entering South Bengal and Kolkata.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If these districts went to Pakistan:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Hooghly would enter Pakistan first<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then re-enter India<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meaning India\u2019s <strong>lifeline river and the Kolkata Port<\/strong> would depend on a foreign country<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This was unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Kolkata port\u2019s functioning, economic security, river management, and cultural importance (like Nadia \u2014 birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu), the <strong>Hooghly had to remain entirely within India<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This single geographical element strongly influenced the final boundary \u2014 something UPSC aspirants must remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_The_Great_Exchange_Khulna_Chittagong_Hill_Tracts\"><\/span><strong>3. The Great Exchange: Khulna &amp; Chittagong Hill Tracts<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To retain Murshidabad and Malda, India agreed to give away:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Khulna_District\"><\/span><strong>Khulna District<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hindu-majority at the time (around 51\u201352%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But geographically aligned with East Pakistan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easier for Pakistan to administer due to direct river + port connectivity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Chittagong_Hill_Tracts\"><\/span><strong>Chittagong Hill Tracts<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>98% non-Muslim population<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buddhist tribes (Chakma), Hindus<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>But geopolitically important for East Pakistan\u2019s <strong>Chittagong Port security<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This was a geography-driven bargain:<br><strong>India kept the river &amp; continuity. Pakistan kept the port security zone.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A perfect example that <strong>partition wasn\u2019t just about religion \u2014 it was geography, rivers, ports, and administrative logic<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Why_UPSC_Aspirants_Must_Study_This\"><\/span><strong>4.
