If there\u2019s one habit that quietly sabotages UPSC aspirants, it\u2019s treating Society (GS 1)<\/strong> and Social Justice (GS 2)<\/strong> as two unrelated papers with two unrelated notebooks. They\u2019re not. They\u2019re really just two halves of the same question.<\/p>\n

GS 1 is asking, \u201cwhat\u2019s going on in Indian society?<\/em>\u201d<\/strong>, while GS 2 is asking, \u201cwhat is the State actually doing about it?<\/em>\u201d<\/strong> The 2026 Mains paper made that connection almost impossible to miss.<\/p>\n

UPSC has stopped wanting definitions<\/strong><\/p>\n

There was a time you could get away with preparing Society as a set of static topics: women, caste, urbanisation, globalisation, and just knowing the textbook definitions. That era is over.<\/p>\n

UPSC now wants diagnosis, not description.<\/strong> Why is this happening? How is society actually changing? What contradictions are showing up along the way?<\/p>\n

Questions like \u201cIs caste disappearing in urban India?<\/em>\u201d<\/strong> or \u201cDo you think digital technology promotes social empowerment?<\/em>\u201d<\/strong> aren\u2019t asking you to define anything, they\u2019re asking you to think.<\/p>\n

Social Justice has quietly gone through the same transformation. The old scheme \u2192 objective \u2192 beneficiaries \u2192 challenges<\/strong> template just doesn\u2019t cut it anymore.<\/p>\n

The malnutrition question in 2026, for instance, wasn\u2019t really about listing nutrition schemes, it was about public health colliding with equity and welfare governance.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The tribal development question wasn\u2019t about schemes either, it was about exclusion, rights, and whether governance is actually working.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The real shift is this: UPSC has stopped asking \u201cwhat has the government done?<\/em>\u201d<\/strong> and started asking \u201cwhy does the problem still exist despite everything the government has done?<\/em>\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n
