The above-mentioned case is a classic example of an ethical dilemma that is quite common in the life of an individual, especially the ones with high moral integrity. So, choice is about the life’s aim and saving a life.
In the above case:

My course of action will be:
This is really an exceptional and unfortunate situation. You have prepared for several years for the civil services and cleared various stages and now you are on the final stage of your selection process. You can’t afford to miss this opportunity nor can you become unkind and unethical by discarding your relative in such a critical condition.
The first priority should be to provide immediate help to the relative. Since the candidates generally start early for the interview, they may have extra time at their disposal. You can immediately hire a taxi and take your relatives to the nearest hospital. You can simultaneously call your parents, friends or other relatives to rush to the hospital so that further treatment can be taken care of.
My actions are based on aspects:
- Ethical and moral responsibility: Every human has a duty towards another human and these responsibilities are governed by principles of humanity. In situations such as this where it is a matter of life and death, then humanistic duties outweigh any other duty including self-goals. In this regard saving a life is a more important action than any other one.
- Family and official duties: The individual being part of my family puts extra onus on me for ensuring their safety. My timely action can save two lives and a family. In addition to that, being an aspirant for civil services, one must be ready to go beyond for doing something right.
- Test of my courage and emotional management: This will this will not be an easy task it will require a strong courage to see somebody injured on the road at the accident site show I need to gather myself emotionally to ensure that my actions would not yield any negative consequences. Courage supported by my emotional intelligence will help me rescue the family.
The real challenge in such conditions is not to lose your patience and keep your emotions under control. You may keep in touch with the family members on the phone and find out the latest conditions of the injured relatives. You must keep your cool during the interview and give your best.
Future action:
- I will rush to the interview procedure as fast as I finish my part of the job and explain the situation that requires my intervention.
Thus, it would be shocking if any person chooses any other action such as driving past the victims because there is no other job more important than saving a precious life. These values form the foundation of civil service and aspirants are expected to uphold them sincerely.
