The ongoing US-Iran Nuclear Pact Controversy has emerged as a critical geopolitical concern with far-reaching implications for countries across the globe. As a key player in international affairs, India finds itself in a delicate position, grappling with the potential consequences that this controversy might have on its national interests. The United States and Iran, engaged in a complex diplomatic dance over the nuclear pact, pose a dilemma for India, given its historical ties with both nations. The outcome of this controversy has the potential to significantly impact India’s strategic, economic, and diplomatic interests. In terms of energy security, India heavily relies on oil imports from Iran, and any disruption in the region could jeopardize its energy needs. Moreover, the geopolitical balance in the Middle East, a region of immense significance to India, may undergo substantial shifts, impacting regional stability and security. In navigating this intricate web of international relations, India must tread carefully to safeguard its national interests. A nuanced and diplomatic approach, involving active engagement with both the United States and Iran, would be imperative. India should leverage its diplomatic channels to advocate for peaceful resolutions, emphasizing dialogue and multilateral negotiations. Balancing its economic interests with geopolitical realities, India must seek to maintain its strategic autonomy, steering clear of aligning too closely with any particular faction involved in the controversy. In doing so, India can contribute to regional stability and reinforce its status as a responsible global player in the face of this challenging geopolitical scenario.

Answer:
The unilateral US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the historic nuclear deal between the permanent members of the UN Security Council, E.U. (P5+1) and Iran, which limited Iran’s nuclear program and lifted the crippling economic sanctions, will have serious ramifications for nations having strategic interests in West Asia. India’s relations with Iran extend beyond the geopolitical and geo-economic binary. The cultural relations between India and Iran extend centuries, but the recent US behavior has led India to a crossroads.
How it Affects the National Interest of India:
- Energy security: Energy is the most critical component of bilateral trade, and Iran contributes significantly to India’s energy security. Iran has been one of the top three suppliers of crude oil to India for over a decade. It might be difficult for India to meet the shortfall in crude oil imports due to USA sanctions on Iran. In addition, the sanction may lead to an increase in oil prices, which may also lead to economic instability for India.
- Strategic Autonomy: Strategic Autonomy has been the guiding principle of Indian foreign policy since independence. India maintains that it abides by only UN sanctions and not unilateral sanctions by any one country. In this case, the US is coercing India and other countries to sever ties with Iran. This has direct implications on autonomous policy making.
- Connectivity: In 2015, India agreed to help develop Iran’s Chabahar Port and an associated railway that would enable India to trade with Afghanistan and Western countries. The Chabahar Port is of great strategic importance due to its location in the Gulf of Oman and at the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz and enables New Delhi access to Afghanistan, bypassing Pakistan. It is also quite near the Gwadar Port of Pakistan being developed by China. It may also impact the (International North-South Transport Corridor) INSTC plan, in which India is the founding member.
- Terrorism: Instability in the region has already resulted in the rise of extremist groups and more uncertainty will only provide them with more safe havens. This might have a direct effect on India’s national security.
- Bilateral ties: The ongoing conflict may negatively affect India- USA, and India- Iran bilateral ties; it also affects India’s strategic autonomy that guides the country’s foreign policy.
- Indian Diaspora: In case this spirals out into direct confrontation between US allies and Iran, then Indians living in the Gulf region would be at stake. Their protection and evacuation would be a huge diplomatic and military manoeuvre.
- Rule-based order: The withdrawal of the US can impact other international agreements and may cause instability. It may also create a spillover effect and reduce trust in international agreements.
How should India Respond to the Situation:
- India can promote regional reconciliation between Iran and the USA for regional stability.
- It can also improve relations with other oil-exporting countries like Saudi Arabia, UAE, etc. as the long-term alternative of energy dependence on Iran.
- India can look for non-dollar-based trade options with Iran like the INSTEX barter mechanism etc. for a continuous uninterrupted supply of oils.
- India can also diversify its oil imports and build strategic oil reserves to meet the shortage in the supply.
- It should also focus more on improving renewable energy sources as a long-term solution to meet energy security.
The new uncertainties instigating from the US-Iran tensions may have multifaceted impacts on India that may harm the economy. Though India has stopped importing oil from Iran after American waivers, India has clear economic, strategic, and historic civilizational ties with Iran and the entire Middle Eastern region. India can play an important peace-maker role between the conflicting parties.
