India’s rich tapestry of cultures, religions, and ethnicities has long been celebrated as a testament to its pluralistic ethos. However, this diversity also renders it susceptible to the influence of radicalism, a phenomenon not confined within its borders but seeping in from neighboring regions. The complex geopolitical landscape of South Asia, characterized by simmering tensions and ideological rifts, has created fertile ground for radical ideologies to take root and spread. This has manifested in various forms, including religious extremism, sectarian violence, and ethno-nationalist movements, posing significant challenges to India’s social fabric and security. The presence of radical elements within the country, often fueled by external forces and exacerbated by socio-economic disparities and political grievances, underscores the urgent need for comprehensive strategies to counter this environment. Addressing the root causes of radicalization requires a multi-pronged approach encompassing socio-economic development, community engagement, and effective law enforcement measures. Promoting inclusive growth, empowering marginalized communities, and fostering inter-faith dialogue are essential to mitigate the appeal of extremist narratives and build resilience against radicalization. Additionally, enhancing intelligence-sharing mechanisms, strengthening border security, and countering radical propaganda through media literacy and counter-narratives are crucial steps to thwart the spread of radicalism across borders. By adopting a holistic strategy that addresses both the domestic and regional dimensions of the challenge, India can effectively mitigate the impact of radicalism and safeguard its pluralistic ethos.

Answer:
India is a secular nation that embraces multiple religions and ethnicities. Its neighbours, however, house radical elements within their boundaries, and this poses a challenge for India. Pakistan fosters radical Islamic elements within its territory, and the Pakistani branch of Taliban is also active. Not only have the radical elements wreaked havoc within Pakistan, they routinely infiltrate into Indian territory.
India’s vulnerability to Radicalisation: multi-religious and multi-ethnic society: The growing religious radicalisation in neighborhoods, especially Islamic radicalisation, is cause of concern for India’s national and internal security. Pakistan based terrorist organizations are actively spreading Islamic radicalisation in India and its border states such as Kashmir, Punjab, etc. Even emergence of radical groups in Bangladesh is also cause of concern for India as both countries share largest land boundaries with India and religious proximity both lead to vulnerability of India to radicalisation.
Steps taken by Government to counter Radical environment:
- Increasing cyber security: Constant monitoring mechanism in the cyber space for early tracking of potential deviants.
- Awareness: Immediate family members and friends are the first people who know and understand behaviour of the person who is getting radicalised. Hence awareness among people regarding radicalisation is necessary to avoid it.
- Intelligence: Intelligence sharing, gathering and efficient coordination among different security agencies is much needed. To counter “Hinterland terrorism” strong network of intelligence sharing, gathering and dissemination of the same is required.
- Countering Lone wolf attacks: The recent phenomena and very effectives one is to radicalize youths and make them mercenaries to carry out lone-wolf attacks. To counter this need to vigilance on extremist sites and internet traffic to check Indian accounts and keep close monitoring.
- Counter rising communalism: Communalism is rising in India as religious intolerance in increasing due right-wing ideology and targeting one particular community is one serious issue. As this becomes fertile ground for attracting youths by terrorist organizations.
- Constitutional spirit: Indian constitution is focused on the secular nature of the state which promotes religious tolerance. Religious tolerance is key for countries like India and to counter religious extremism.
- Unity in diversity: India has been promoting this philosophy but in between rising religious intolerance and religious polarization is becoming a threat to this philosophy.
Hence, rising religious radicalism in neighborhood countries like Pakistan and Bangladesh is a real danger for India’s national security and internal security. To counter this phenomena India needs to invest in de-radicalisation and counter radicalisation techniques. With this multiple intervention in areas of political, social, economic, and religious level needed.
