After graduating, Mr. Aishwarya Verma didn’t go for campus placements. Instead, he started preparing for civil services right away, even taking the exam during his internship in the final year.
“I realised that civil services is what I am best suited for, and I am going to enjoy working there only. Why am I wasting time if my goal is clear? This was it and everything fell through.”
In his fourth attempt, Aishwarya secured the fourth rank nationwide. His first try was like a practice round, not even clearing the preliminary stage. In the second and third attempts, he couldn’t make it to the personality test/interview stage.
In 2019, he scored around 98 percent in the CAT exam. After his fourth attempt, he had planned to pursue an MBA as another career option.
“I’m glad I don’t have to do that now because that job wouldn’t satisfy me. I chose civil services because it lets me do things that will eventually make someone’s life better. That’s a big motivator for me to be passionate about this job.”
Now that he achieved his goal, he’s eager to work in the field he aimed for. He wants to learn as much as he can from his seniors and put his learning into practice.

Aishwarya faced a lot of challenges on his way to success. He experienced failures and felt disappointed, especially after his third attempt, where he thought he would pass the exam. Here are some tips he shared for UPSC preparation:
- Aishwarya mentioned that studying for very long hours, like 16 hours, is not practical and is just a myth.
- He advised aspiring candidates to set short-term and long-term goals to stay consistent with their studies since the syllabus is extensive.
- Aishwarya used to play cricket or chess during study breaks. According to him, this helped reduce unnecessary pressure.
