Emotional intelligence (EI) is the capability of a person to assess, manage and control one’s own emotions as well as emotions of others. It is critical to manage our behaviour and decision making. It has 5 components- self awareness, self regulation, motivation, empathy and social skills. These 5 components are important to develop emotional intelligence among people.
Emotional Intelligence Can Be Developed in People:
- Perceiving emotions: This is the basic ability to register and recognise emotions. People who are high in emotional intelligence are able to identify when they are experiencing a particular emotion and are able to use their vocabulary to label the feeling.
- Understanding emotions: This component refers to using the specific information that various emotions provide and knowing how that might affect their behaviour. Each emotion conveys distinct data to individuals about their environment and energizes one for action in a particular direction. Emotionally intelligent people are able to ‘read’ this information and use it to guide their behaviour.
- Managing emotions: When one recognises their emotions quickly and understands their meaning, it becomes relatively easier for them to think about the next steps regarding how to change them. This applies to the self as well as others.
- Using emotions: The ability to use one’s emotions is more than just dealing with or managing emotions. It involves the skill of leveraging emotions to enhance our thinking, decision-making and relationships.
It Helps an Individual in Making Ethical Decisions By:
- Informed decision making: Emotions help inform decisions by allowing the decision maker to anticipate the positive and negative emotional consequences of a particular decision on the decision maker and on others. The ability to read others’ emotions, is critical in responding to others’ feelings.
2. Empathy: More empathic individuals make more ethical decisions because they take into consideration the reactions and feelings of those impacted by the decision. The tendency to feel another’s pain help the decision maker to make ethical decisions. - Moral decisions: Ability to regulate emotion helps a decision maker monitor his/her own emotional state, and serves to inform about whether a particular decision feels good or bad. This ability could be used to regulate emotions productively toward more situations.
- Conflict resolution: Emotional Intelligence helps individuals in resolving conflict effectively. It enables a person to visualize the effect of his decisions on him and others and help him to manage negative emotions like greed and anger.
- Objective Decision making: Emotionally Intelligent people make objective decisions based on accumulated wisdom and understanding with time. A person who manages his or her emotions will take quick and strong decisions without emotions being involved after proper cost-benefit analysis.
Thus, Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the practical knowledge that one needs to have to be effective in any field even if the knowledge acquired from the academic arena is average. As Aristotle has put it, “ Anyone can become angry, that is easy, but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way that is not within everybody’s power and is not easy.
