Environmental ethics is a branch of philosophy concerned with the moral relationship between humans and the natural world. It explores questions of how humans should interact with the environment, what responsibilities we have towards other living beings and ecosystems, and what values should guide our actions regarding the environment. Studying environmental ethics is crucial because it helps us understand the ethical implications of our decisions and behaviors on the planet and future generations. It encourages us to consider the long-term consequences of our actions and strive for a harmonious coexistence with nature.
One pressing environmental issue that can be examined through the lens of environmental ethics is climate change. From an environmental ethics perspective, climate change raises questions about intergenerational justice, as the actions of current generations significantly impact the well-being of future generations and other species. Furthermore, it highlights the ethical responsibility of developed nations, which have historically contributed the most to greenhouse gas emissions, to take action to mitigate climate change and assist vulnerable communities and ecosystems affected by its consequences.

Answer:
Environmental ethics is a field of study that seeks to understand humans’ moral obligations to protect and preserve the environment. It is a branch of ethics that recognizes the intrinsic value of nature, the interconnectedness of all living things, and the responsibility of humans to act by ethical principles. The job of environmental ethics is to outline our moral obligations in the context of the crisis we face.
Types of Environmental Ethics:
- Libertarian Extension: Libertarian extension is a type of environmental ethics that focuses on an individual’s right to do whatever they want with the environment and its resources. This concept also stresses that an individual should not impose their values on others and should instead respect the choices of others.
- Ecological Extension: Ecological Extension is a type of environmental ethics that focuses on preserving the natural environment and its resources to maintain the balance and health of the ecosystem. This concept stresses the importance of humans working with nature to sustain it for future generations.
- Conservation Ethics: Conservation Ethics is a type of environmental ethics that focuses on preserving natural resources for future generations by ensuring that current resources are not depleted or damaged beyond repair. - It teaches us responsibility towards our environment, advocating for environmentally friendly practices that help protect natural resources.
- Environmental ethics also promotes better public policies and laws, which help ensure that our environment is properly cared for.
Environmental issue from the viewpoint of Environmental Ethics:
Air pollution as a concern:
- Due to the progress and modernization aspect of globalization, human beings have forgotten their responsibilities to the environment. Increased rates of urbanization, overpopulation, industrialization, and higher vehicle density have resulted in Air-pollution in India along with other parts of the world.
- For example, the ‘Transportation Division’ being a major contributor to the air-pollution, can be made to flourish in a way where people can be encouraged to use public transport more often and limit the use of personal vehicles for their daily commute. The odd-Even scheme rolled out in Delhi in the past has been a good initiative in this direction. Also, pool car services by some Cab-hailing companies have added to the efforts on the part of Entrepreneurs to mitigate the ill effects of air pollution.
- Environmental ethics creates an awareness for people to give up certain comforts in their lives or to substitute certain lifestyle activities, to conserve or even mitigate the environmental impact of their actions. The initiatives of CSR funding and also education from formative years by forming Eco-Clubs in schools can bring about awareness.
Environmentalists such as Baba Amte, and Sunderlal Bahuguna(Chipko Movement) have also spread awareness about ecological balance and wildlife preservation. They believed in the concept of living in harmony with nature, and not exploiting nature for selfish gains. They also motivated people to indulge in sustainable development practices that would benefit both mankind and nature. Environmental ethics can be a guide for humans to tackle this problem by teaching people to develop their values and think of a shared interest of the society as a whole rather than just their interests.
