Introduction
South West Monsoon(SWM) is a characteristic feature of the Indian Subcontinent. BHOJPUR Region lies in the state of Bihar of India and is influenced by the Bay of Bengal (BOB) branch of SWM.

“PURVAIYA
During the month of June –September, India develops Intense low pressure over the Tibetan Plateau making South East Trade winds loaded with moisture rush toward the LP Zone. However these winds bifurcate into two branches due to presence of Indian Peninsula, the BOB branch further turns North West and enters BHOJPUR Region of Bihar via eastern side giving it the name called “PURVAIYA” as easterly winds.
INFLUENCE OF PURVAIYA ON CULTURAL ETHOS OF BHOJPUR REGION
- Festivals and Rituals are lined up in continuation after the arrival of the seasonal winds such as Chatt Puja, Dura Puja , Teej .
- Agricultural Prosperity as the arrival of monsoon is an anticipated event for farmers as it impacts their farm produce ,quality and quantity.
- Traditional Practices and Cuisines like consumption of Dahi –chura, pakoras, ghugni during monsoon is a local celebrated trait all over the region.
- Language and Folklore as “purvaiya” is a celebrated word in the region and its presence is found in songs ,stories and proverbs.
- Housing of the people is to withstand sudden floods hence they prefer temporary shelters near their agricultural fields or 2 storey houses .They often temporarily migrate to higher places during times of floods .
Conclusion
Hence “Purvaiya” though a climatic factor has multiple roles influencing the Economy and Cultural sphere of life of people of the Bhojpur region .
