Divya’s UPSC CSE preparation strategy is a practical case study of how aspirants can improve their preparation through structured practice, performance analysis, and repeated revision. After six attempts, Divya secured AIR 182 in UPSC CSE 2025, refining her approach after multiple setbacks in Prelims and one unsuccessful attempt after reaching the interview stage. Her strategy focused on analysing previous-year questions, reviewing mock-test mistakes, practising structured answer writing, using concise micro-notes, and integrating maps, diagrams, case studies, and current affairs. Her preparation also included repeated revision and targeted practice in the final months before Prelims. This article explains Divya’s UPSC preparation strategy, including her approach to Prelims, Mains answer writing, current affairs, note-making, revision, and handling setbacks.

Early Failures: Working Hard But Not Smart

Divya started her UPSC preparation in 2018 and appeared for the exam the same year. However, in her first two attempts (2018 and 2019) she could not clear the prelims.

Looking back, she realized the biggest problem was lack of direction.

Like many aspirants, she followed a standard booklist:

• Indian Polity by Laxmikanth
• Spectrum for Modern History
• Other commonly recommended books

However, she was just finishing books without understanding the exam demand.

The UPSC topper explained that reading books alone is not enough. Aspirants must understand:

• UPSC syllabus
• Nature of questions
• Analytical thinking required in answers

Without this understanding, knowledge cannot be used effectively in the exam.

The Real Importance of Previous Year Questions (PYQs)

One major mistake during her early preparation was ignoring previous year questions.

Divya admitted that during her first attempt she did not even solve PYQs properly.

Later, she realized that PYQs are the most important learning tool in UPSC preparation.

But simply solving them is not enough.

The UPSC topper highlighted a better method:

Instead of just checking the correct answer, aspirants should analyze:

• Why the question went wrong
• Whether the mistake happened due to lack of revision
• Whether the concept was unclear
• Whether it was a memory gap

This analysis helps identify weak areas and improves future performance.

Test Series Strategy for Prelims

Divya attempted around 50 mock tests before prelims.

However, the key part of her preparation was test analysis.

For every test she spent:

• 1–2 hours analyzing mistakes
• Revising related concepts immediately
• Updating notes from standard books

This process ensured that every test became a learning opportunity rather than just a score evaluation.

Current Affairs Strategy Without Newspaper Dependency

Interestingly, this UPSC topper did not rely heavily on newspapers.

She admitted that she struggled to manage daily newspapers effectively.

Instead, she created a simplified current affairs system:

• Watching YouTube current affairs discussions
• Following selected websites
• Using curated compilations before prelims

She spent 20–30 minutes daily on current affairs.

Before prelims, she revised subject-wise compilations multiple times rather than making bulky notes.

Answer Writing Strategy of the UPSC Topper

Answer writing was one of Divya’s strongest areas during preparation.

Her answer writing journey started with a simple method.

Phase 1: Copy and Rewrite

Initially she followed a basic practice routine:

• Read a topper answer
• Close the book
• Rewrite the answer from memory

She wrote around 100 answers in this phase.

This helped her understand the structure expected in UPSC Mains answers.

Phase 2: Developing Structured Answers

After gaining confidence, she improved her answers by focusing on:

• Clear introduction
• Structured body
• Directly addressing the demand of the question
• Conclusion

She emphasized that filling pages is not important. What matters is answering the question clearly and directly.

Phase 3: Value Addition

To make answers more effective, the UPSC topper added value through:

• Diagrams
• Flowcharts
• Case studies
• Data points

She also maintained a separate notebook for diagrams and maps, especially for Geography optional.

During the exam she ensured:

• At least 1–2 diagrams in 10-mark questions
• Around 3 diagrams in 15-mark questions

This helped improve presentation and marks.

Notes Making Strategy: From Bulky Notes to Micro Notes

Another key strategy used by this UPSC topper was note consolidation.

Instead of repeatedly reading large notes, she created very short revision summaries.

Before the Mains exam, each subject was condensed into 10–15 pages of micro notes.

This made multiple revisions possible within limited time.

The idea was simple:

Understanding-based notes are far more effective than copying content from books.

How Long Does UPSC Preparation Really Take?

According to the UPSC topper, a realistic preparation timeline is:

• 8 months to consolidate the syllabus once
• Additional months for revision and practice

Overall, UPSC preparation generally takes 1–2 years for most aspirants.

She also emphasized that aspirants should not lose motivation if success takes time.

Dealing With Failure During UPSC Preparation

Divya openly spoke about the emotional challenges of the journey.

After multiple unsuccessful attempts, there were moments when she felt like quitting.

What helped her continue was:

• Support from parents
• Encouragement from friends
• Belief in her preparation process

She believes that self-belief is critical in such a long and uncertain exam journey.

Prelims Strategy in the Final Months

For the last 1–2 months before prelims, she focused mainly on revision.

Her approach included:

• Revising the entire syllabus 4–5 times
• Practicing PYQs 6–7 times between January and May
• Solving questions daily (20–100 questions)

She emphasized that PYQs should be used to understand:

• Question patterns
• Elimination techniques
• Common themes in UPSC papers

Key Lessons From This UPSC Topper

Divya’s journey provides several practical insights for aspirants:

• Understand the UPSC syllabus and exam demand
• Analyze PYQs deeply instead of solving them mechanically
• Spend more time analyzing mock tests than taking them
• Focus on structured answer writing
• Use multiple revisions with concise notes

Most importantly, she advises aspirants to combine hard work with the right strategy.

Final Message From the UPSC Topper

Summarizing her journey, Divya shared a simple message for aspirants:

Have a clear strategy.
Work hard consistently.
But most importantly, work smart and stay in the right direction.

UPSC preparation is a long process, but with persistence and the right approach, success eventually follows.
