SSC CGL Exam Pattern and Syllabus 

There are four steps in the Selection Process of the SSC CGL Exam:  

  • Tier 1 Exam (Online) 
  • Tier 2 Exam (Online) 
  • Tier 3 Exam (Offline; Written) (Descriptive Paper)
  • Tier 4 Test CPT (Computer Proficiency Test), Skill Test (Wherever applicable), Document Verification. 

Tier 1 Exam: It comprises a single paper with four different topics.  

Total 100 Questions of 200 marks are present in the paper, two marks are awarded for every right answer, and you will lose 0.5 marks for every wrong answer. The candidate gets a total of 60 mins to finish the exam. 

It is a computer-based online exam. Candidates that qualify for the exam can move on to Tier 2. Rankings will be based on the cut-off criteria.

TIER 1 SYLLABUS

General Awareness: 

The questions will also be asked from Science, Current Affairs, Books and Authors, Sports, Important Schemes, Important Days, Portfolios, People in News etc. Questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining to History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Policy & Scientific Research. 

English Language: 

Phrases and Idioms, one-word Substitution, Sentence Correction, Reading Comprehension, Synonyms-Antonyms, Active Passive, Error Spotting, Fill in the Blanks, Spellings Correction, Sentence Rearrangement, Sentence Improvement, Cloze test etc. 

General Intelligence and Reasoning: 

Space Orientation, Space Visualization, Venn Diagrams, Drawing inferences, Punched hole/ pattern- folding & un-folding, Figural Pattern- folding and completion, Indexing, Address matching, Date & city matching, Semantic Analogy, Symbolic/ Number Analogy, Figural Analogy, Semantic Classification, Symbolic/ Number Classification, Figural Classification, Semantic Series, Number Series, Figural Series,  Problem Solving, Word Building, Coding & de-coding, Numerical Operations, symbolic Operations, Trends, etc. 

Quantitative Aptitude: 

Computation of whole numbers, Profit and Loss, Mixture and Allegation, Time and distance, Time & Work, Percentage. Ratio & & Elementary surds, Graphs of Linear Equations, Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Discount, Partnership Business,  Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles, Triangle, Quadrilaterals, decimals, fractions and relationships between numbers, Regular Polygons, Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Proportion, Square roots, Averages, Interest, Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra, etc. 

 

Tier 2 Exam: Tier 2 comprises four different papers of four different subject topics. 

The marking scheme is similar to Tier 1 in three of the papers i.e., Paper-I, Paper-III, and Paper-IV. However, Paper-II (English Language and Comprehension) is the subject where only one mark will be awarded per question as it has 200 questions in total and for every wrong answer, 0.25 marks will be deducted. In Tier 2, candidates are offered 120 minutes for each paper. Rankings in the Tier 2 Exam will also be based on the cut-off criteria. In Tier 2, Paper-I and Paper-II are compulsory for all the posts.

TIER 2 SYLLABUS

PAPER-I 

Percentage, Ratio & Proportion, Square roots, Averages Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Partnership Business, Mixture and Allegation, Time and distance, Time & Work, Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra & Elementary surds, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles, Interest, Profit and Loss, Discount, Graphs of Linear Equations, Triangle, etc. 

PAPER-II 

Spot the error, fill in 21 the blanks, synonyms, antonyms, spelling/ detecting misspelt words, idioms & phrase shuffling of sentences in a passage, cloze passage & comprehension passage, one-word substitution, improvement of sentences, active/ passive voice of verbs, conversion into direct/ indirect narration, shuffling of sentence parts, etc. 

PAPER-III 

Collection, Classification and Presentation of Statistical Data, Measures of Dispersion- Common measures dispersion, Measures of Central Tendency, Correlation and Regression, Sampling Theory, Random Variable and Probability Distributions, etc. 

PAPER-IV 

  • Finance and Accounts-(80 marks): 

Fundamental principles and basic concepts of Accounting: Financial Accounting, Basic concepts of accounting. 

  • Economics and Governance-(120 marks):  

Finance Commission-Role and functions, Theory of Demand and Supply, Basic Concept of Economics and introduction to Microeconomics, Theory of Production, and cost, etc. 

  • Indian Economy: 

Nature of the Indian Economy Role of different sectors, Role of Agriculture, Industry and Services-their problems and growth, Poverty, and unemployment- Absolute and relative poverty, types, causes and incidence of unemployment, Monetary/ Fiscal policy- Role and functions of Reserve Bank of India; functions of commercial Banks/RRB/Payment Banks, etc. 

 

Tier 3 Exam: After passing the Tier-1 and Tier-2 Exams, candidates can take the Tier 3 Exam. In the Tier 3 Exam, the Candidates will get 1 hour to write a Descriptive Essay, Précis, Letter, Application. Any of these will carry 100 marks. Candidates need to secure at least 33% to qualify for this exam.

Tier 4 Exam: It is the last step of the selection process of the SSC-CGL exam. Here the candidates will be tested based on the department or post they are applying for. It contains different kinds of skill-based tests. This is also the time when the documents of the candidates are verified. Document verification is a very crucial step in the process of selection for the SSC-CGL jobs.
